The peripheral nervous system consists of the nerves that carry messages of sensation and movement throughout the body. They connect to the central nervous system which is made up of the brain and spinal cord. In the extremities, repetitive movement or injury can cause pain in the area of the nerve. An example is carpal tunnel syndrome where the median nerve in the wrist is compressed and irritated causing pain in the hand. When conservative measures such as therapy, bracing, and analgesics do not provide help, surgery can provide relief.
