Lee R. Guterman, Ph.D., M.D.

Lee Guterman was born in New York City in 1959. He attended the State University of New York at Binghamton and received a BA in Chemistry. He did his graduate work in Chemistry at Clarkson University where he was an Eastman Kodak Fellow. His thesis work centered around physical polymer chemistry, photophysics, and artificial membrane chemistry and transport. He worked on nerve impulse transmission at the Wood’s Hole Marine Biological Laboratory. He received his PhD in 1985, and, shortly thereafter, started medical school. He was awarded the Norwich Eaton Award for outstanding research. He was awarded a summer fellowship in Neurosurgery at the Barrow Neurologic Institute.

He completed his residency training in general and endovascular neurosurgery at the University of Buffalo. During his residency he established an endovascular research laboratory that has grown into the multidisciplinary Toshiba Stroke Research Center.

He is presently an attending neurosurgeon for Buffalo Neurosurgery Group and Medical Director of Stroke for the Catholic Health System of Buffalo. He apportions his duties between general, vascular, and endovascular neurosurgery. He serves on the medical advisory board of numerous medical device companies, and has collaborated with corporate and academic scientists throughout the world. He has over 100 publications to his credit, and several patents. He is a regular invited speaker at numerous national and international meetings and symposia.
